Nick Vujicic: A Great Man with Inspiration

Today on this day of March 7, 2013, a great man came to my school. Even though he doesn’t have arms or legs, he has a heart. A heart filled with a message to everyone, a message filled with inspiration. This great man is Nick Vujicic. He came to my school, Roy High School, in Roy, Utah to give a speech to inspire us to love one another, to love ourselves, and to never give up.
Nick Vujicic was born in Australia and he grew up with a negative thought about having no arms and no legs. He was teased when he was younger. He told us that at age 8 he had contemplated suicide and at age 10 he tried to commit suicide.  After a few tries he had a thought, an image, of his parents crying over his grave. That’s when he stopped. He then decided to inspire not only himself, but others to never give up.
During the assembly he asked all of us to raise our hands and close our eyes. Then he asked three questions and if our own answer was a yes, to put our hands in a fist. The first question was, “Who has thought of committing suicide?” The second, “Who has tried to commit suicide?” The third, “Who has been teased in life?” When he finished asking those three questions he told us the results he saw. 1/14 in the auditorium has thought of it. 2/14 had tried to commit it. And last but not least, he said that many of us have been teased. This had blown away many of our minds to think that many of us had thought about it and has tried.
After all that, he then went on to tell us to stop hurting each other and to start loving each other. He said we had to stop the hate and to start helping support each other. I was amazed that he had the guts to just say it. To allow that thought to hang in the air. Because I also believe that we have to just support each other; to stop spreading the hate because that doesn’t make us human.
He then showed us that we all fall down. At this point he laid down on his stomach on the table. He then told us that at this point in our lives, “ There are choices where we give up or get up.” He told us that we shouldn’t give up. We can’t give up because we have a reason.
When he got to the point of failure he said there isn’t such a thing as failing. If we did our best, we are not a failure. This had a positive impact on everyone because no matter what we tried our best.
But what about the lessons of being thankful and loving others for who they are? Well, at the end he saved the best. He said, “Be angry for what we don’t have. Be thankful for what you have.” Love yourself for who you are and to love others for who they are.
Overall, this assembly is the best experience, the best lesson to have because it taught not only me, but also others about something. It inspired us to do our best, to never give up, to not hate, and to also inspire us to tell others about our feelings when we get down.
